JAKARTA - For not clear reason, TNI Commander General Gatot Nurmantyo was denied entry to the United States (US).

Originally, Gatot will attend the Chiefs of Defense Conference on Country Violent Extremist Organization (VEOs) which will be held on 23-24 October 2017 in Washington DC. The event itself is an invitation to the Commander of US Armed Forces, General Joseph F Durford, Jr.

A notice of rejection was made by the Emirates airline at request of the US internal security authority, shortly before delegation of TNI Commander departed.

Head of General Information Center TNI, Major General TNI Wuryanto explained that the TNI Commander received an official invitation sent by General Joseph F Durford, Jr. and then General Gatot Nutmantyo replied to the letter and confirmed his presence as a form of appreciation and attention.

"The TNI Commander sent the letter in honor of General Joseph F Durford Jr. who is a friend and senior of Gatot Nurmantyo," Maj. Gen. Wuryanto told at TNI headquarters Cilangkap, Jakarta on Sunday (23/10).

According to him, TNI General Gatot Nurmantyo and his wife and delegation have arranged visas and other administration to prepare for departure, then on Saturday 21 October, the TNI Commander is ready to depart using Emirates airline.

However, shortly before departure there is a notice from the airline that the TNI Commander and the delegate may not enter US territory by US Custom and Border Protection.

Related to this incident, said Wuyanto, TNI Commander has reported to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and Coordinating Minister Wiranto and sent a letter to General Joseph F Durfort Jr for waiting an explanation of this incident.

"The departure to US at the invitation of the Armed Forces Commander and the good relations of the two countries and the good relationship between the Armed Forces Commander and the TNI Commander, therefore the TNI Commander and his wife and delegates decided not to attend the invitation until there was an official explanation from the Americans" said Wuryanto.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Indonesian Embassy in Washington DC, US has sent a diplomatic note to the US Foreign Ministry related to the refusal of TNI Commander, General Gatot Nurmantyo to enter the US territory.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia through a short message to the media said, tomorrow, his side will also call the US representation in Jakarta. However, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not provide details of the summoning time of the US representative.

"The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Washington DC has sent a diplomatic note to the Foreign Ministry asking for clarification related to the incident yesterday," said the official statement of the Foreign Ministry via short message on Sunday (22/10).

"Considering that the US Ambassador is not in Jakarta, the US Deputy Ambassador has also been summoned to the Foreign Ministry tomorrow to provide information," continued the statement.
