CHICAGO - This accident started when passangger reported that aircraft's right engine 'became a massive fireball' as passengers fled the American Airlines jet.
A passenger plane has burst into flames at Chicago's O'Hare airport sending an enormous plume of smoke billowing into the sky, according to reports.
Medics said at least eight people have been left injured after the incident and several are in a serious condition. Witnesses reported that the aircraft's right engine "became a massive fireball" as passengers fled the American Airlines jet.
The plane blew a tyre and was forced to abort take-off shortly after leaving for Miami, according to the FAA. At least five people have been hurt with several in a red condition, according to medics. All of those on board were evacuated but the runway was closed by aviation officials. In a video posted online flames can be seen amid a thick cloud of black smoke coming from the Boeing 767's fuselage.
"All passengers onboard American Airlines flight 383 have been bused back to the terminal. Seven passengers and one flight attendant reported injuries and were transported to the hospital to be evaluated. We are taking care of our customers and crew members and are re-accommodating our passengers on another flight to Miami this evening," American Airlines said in a statement.
Timothy Sampey of Chicago's Fire Department said the mishap could have been much worse. The plane was fully loaded with 43,000lbs (19,504kg) of jet fuel, which was leaking when fire crews reached the jet.
"So they had a heavy volume of fire on both the engine and the entire wing. This could have been absolutely devastating if it happened later," he told a news conference.
