QUEENSLAND - John Chardon, husband of Surabaya born, Novy Chardon who went missing from a suburb of the Gold Coast, Australia, in 2013 was arrested for her murder at Friday morning (17/6).

Chardon (68) arrived at Brisbane’s police watchhouse in an unmarked government vehicle on Friday morning. He was due in Brisbane magistrates court later on Friday.

Novy was last seen alive at a gas station in the suburb of Coomera on Feb. 6, 2013, and a friend reported her missing. Suspicions were raised when her husband John Chardon fled to Indonesia with their two young children just two days later while investigations were launching.

Det. Supt. Dave Hutchinson from Queensland Police told local media that the evidence against Chardon is “circumstantial,” but strong.

“This has been a very long and protracted investigation. We wanted to make sure we got it right,” he said as reported Guardian.

This Gold Coast businessman does not qualify for bail and will face court Aug. 29.

Novy’s mother, Estralita Aler, spoke to the Jakarta Globe on the one-year anniversary of her daughter’s disappearance about her pain and her hunt for answers.

Estralita had reached out to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan), but the agencies were unable to provide help.

“I’ve been told that my daughter’s nationality has changed, she became an Australian citizen in 2009 and therefore there was not much the ministry could do,” she said at the time.

The marriage between Novy and her husband was fraught, Estralita said, and they fought often over finances and John’s alleged infidelities. Her mother maintained Novy was seeking a divorce.

Violence against women at the hands of their male partners has become a headline grabbing issue in Australia, with one woman a week murdered by their partners or former partners.
